Air Show

Along with appr. 300,000 other people, we visited Hill Air Force Base over the weekend for their Warriors over the Wasatch air show.  It is always a good time.

We explored some of their planes:

See Ellie's skirt?  We bought it about 10 months ago, and it was too long for her, like it dragged on the ground and we had to roll it up at the waist.  I think my girl has grown like 4 inches in the last year.  And she doesn't have a pot belly, but it sure looks like it in this photo.  :)  She'll be passing up this short 'ol mom in no time.

Daisy's "it's really bright out here" face:

No problem, I'll just swipe Dad's sunnies here:
 Swiper, no swiping!

We enjoyed watched several prop planes and parachuters and such as we walked around and then found a seat shortly before the big event:  The Thunderbirds.

I don't know how close those jets actually are, but holy cannoli, they look too close for comfort.

 Phew, they made it!

Oh, how sweet, it's a heart:

Once again.  That is madness.  But really cool madness.

Our fam:
I used to think I would be that mom that had my girls all dressed cute and hair done.  Look at those ragamuffins!  I guess I'm not.  Hmmm.  I'm okay with that.

Everett wasn't smiling or looking in that one, so how about this:
By the way, this event was sandwiched in the middle of a pretty awesome day.  Here's our rundown:  I went running, Nick went to help someone move into the neighborhood, we all went to Walmart, we went to the city parade, we made lunches to go, we went to the air show, we picked up dinner and met cousins at a park, and then we came home, showered the kids, and watched fireworks from Maren's bed.  Summer just doesn't get any better than that!

To My Daughters

I've been witnessing the buzz surrounding women in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who are demanding they receive the priesthood.  When their leader was excommunicated, I saw several sad women ask, "But what do I tell my daughters?"  As a mother of four daughters, I felt saddened by this, because for me, there is no question what I teach them.  This prompted this post.  Writing it was therapeutic for me.  It is personal.  I share it because I made a personal promise that I would share my testimony where given the opportunity.

To My Daughters,

You are growing up in a crazy world.  A world where values and morals are quickly disappearing.  A world where your opinions are valued, but only if they are politically correct.  A world where we can no longer call sin, sin.  A world where others feel they are not loved and accepted if we do not condone their actions.  A world that is stepping farther and farther away from God.  A world where other women may tell you that you are not enough, that you need more to be successful in this life.  A world where the very definition of “family” is being tested.  It is frightening to bring a child into this world, knowing what you’ll have to face in your future.  I can only imagine.  You’ll have to stand tall, be brave.  You’ll have to be taught and have a sure foundation.  I want you to be anchored to something that will bring you peace.  Something that, even in the greatest storms of life, will give you protection and save you from being spiritually destroyed.  This is a big challenge for a mother, and I hope and pray that I have it in me to show you the way, for you must attach yourself to the Rock of your salvation; I cannot do it for you.

My dear daughters, it is an honor to be a woman.  Your gender is part of your identity and it is no mistake.  You have beautiful, in-born characteristics that are unique to being a woman.  That is special.  Don’t let anyone tell you that you need to have all that a man has in order for you to be of worth.  That is a lie that Satan would like you to believe.  Men are special and unique in their own ways, and together, the two of you make something designed for the eternities.  Men and women need each other to be different.

My hope is that someday, you will meet a man who will love you and want to spend eternity with you, and you will feel the same towards him.  Together, you will stand equal before God.  You will parent together.  You will make big life decisions together.  You will serve together.  Your husband is responsible to protect, provide, and preside in the home.  That word, preside, scares a lot of people these days.  They think it means to “rule over”, but that is not the meaning the Lord has given us.  Honestly, it is difficult to put into words, but when you see it, you know it’s there.  It means that your husband will be responsible to lead the family in righteousness, with you right there by his side, and encouraging him where necessary.  Heavenly Father is a God of order.  He has a system that He follows, and has since the beginning of time.  I believe that the husband, righteously presiding in the home, is part of this order.  I am so grateful for your father.  You are blessed to have such a good example of what it looks like to preside righteously.  It is important to both of us that we read the scriptures together as a family, pray together as a family, and have family home evening.  We both make sure this happens.  But he knows that he has a special responsibility to make sure that our family stays close to the Lord.  He makes sure that the gospel is taught in our home, that we attend our meetings.  He holds the priesthood worthily and I’ve seen the joy and peace as he has used it in our home to bless us all.  I know that I have full access to priesthood power through your dad.  And, in those times in your life where you may not have a priesthood holder in your home (you can’t live with us forever), you will always find access to that power around you.  Remember that a man holding the priesthood cannot bless himself.  It is only for the blessing of others.  And it certainly has nothing to do with pride, and wanting it for the power of it.

Never degrade or diminish the important roles that priesthood holders have.  Just as a woman has certain roles and responsibilities divinely given them, men also have roles and responsibilities designed by our Heavenly Father.  One of our jobs, as children of God, is to encourage the best in others.  Please uplift and help all people around you, including encouraging the young men and men in your life to hold their priesthood worthily.  They, too, should encourage and support you in your roles as a woman.

Only a woman can become a mother.  That is a very special role that I hope you get a chance to experience.  I can’t even put in words how much I love you.  How much I desire for you.  How much being a mother has changed me as a person.  I am so grateful that I have the opportunity to be with you, to be the one to teach you how to be kind to others, how to tie your shoes, to teach you about a loving Father in Heaven.  Motherhood is belittled in this crazy world.  There will be many who tell you that you can do more good by climbing corporate ladders.  They will tell you women should work because more money will provide greater advantage for your kids.  They will tell you that being home with children is not fair, because we should not be treated any differently from men.  They will trivialize the importance of mothers.  I know that a lot of mothers have to work, but that’s not the point.  The point is this:  mothers are important.  Being a mother is the greatest opportunity to create good in this world.  I hope I am teaching you so that when it is time for you to go out on your own, you will be prepared to take on whatever comes your way, and especially to be a light to others.  What greater power could I, or you, or any woman ask for?  There is no better way to change the world than to love and teach a child.  This is a huge responsibility.  The Lord does not take it lightly, and neither do I.  I do all I can to be with you and take these opportunities to teach.  That is why the Lord wants mothers at home.  I’m convinced that is why He hasn’t asked women to carry the leadership of the church.  He needs women who will put heart and soul into motherhood, because he needs young men and young women who know and love the gospel and who will live it and give the world hope.  Do you see that vision?  It is powerful, and it belongs to you.  Take those beautiful things that belong only to women and make the world a better place.

I do not trivialize the importance of fathers.  They also teach and love their children, and they are necessary, but as discussed above, genders have been given, naturally, those gifts that make them suited to their roles.  Mothers do a better job mothering children than fathers.  It’s been proven.  Is there any question?  Also, I know not all women have the opportunity to bare and mother their own children.  Does this mean they cannot fulfill their roles given them?  NO!  For, all women are given opportunities to be “mothers”.  Perhaps not in blood, but we all can nurture and love as only women can.

I want to talk about modesty for just a moment.  The world loves a sexy woman:  low-cut tops and bottoms to “show what you got”.  My dear girls, that may be what the world wants of you, but it is not what the Lord wants for you.  We were given bodies, and we respect and love those bodies.  We show that respect by caring for them, and covering them appropriately.  This also shows respect for others.  This does have to do with sexuality, for our bodies are built (male and female) to respond to stimulus.  We were given the power of procreation to be exercised within the bounds that the Lord has set.  And that begins with modesty.  I, personally, made the choice to be modest because I know that is what the Lord has asked of us.  I have made promises with the Lord that I will dress modestly, and I hope that you too will want to stand apart from the world in this way.  I know that it has been a blessing in my life.

My daughters, I want you to know that your worth is immeasurable.  You are a daughter of God and He loves you.  My prayer is that you come to know Him, and feel His guiding and loving influence in your life.  He will lead and guide you.  He will bring you peace.  When you make and keep covenants with Him, you will be protected.  I have felt this in my life, and I hope you will too.  There will be many times in your life when you are confused.  You may be unsure of the path you should take.   You may have questions about His gospel.  There are always things that we, as mortals, do not understand.  Go, ask Him in prayer.  He will answer.  It may not always be the answer we want.  We may not receive it when we want.  We may not receive it in the way we expect.  But, He will always answer.  I will add that we can trust His prophets.  When we start nit-picking what our modern-day prophets are telling us, we are walking on dangerous ground.  When we follow the prophet, we will always be blessed.

From where I stand, your future is looking pretty bright.

Go and do good.  Be grateful.

I love you,

Your Mom

Peas, Please!

One of my favorite parts of summer?  The produce out of my very own garden.  Our peas are coming on strong, and we've been enjoying them!

My Daisy.

I know, that's a whole lot of photos of a nearly one year old eating peas, but isn't she just the cutest thing?  She's so awesome right now!  So happy!  So cuddly!  So smart!  So fun!

My big girls are pretty awesome too:

Any day now, I'll be picking peas by the five gallon buckets.  Then I may not be so excited about peas.  Anyone want to do a pea podding party?

Be Grateful

 Ladies and Gentlemen,

We have a toddler in the house.
Only two-legged creatures here!  Little D has been walking for weeks now, taking several steps at a time, but this last week (after recovering from her sickness) she's decided it's the only way to travel!  It's adorable.

A moment about my baby.  She very well may likely (how's that?) be our last.  And she's becoming more and more not a baby every day, so I've been thinking a lot about lasts.  I put her baby clothes away when she's grown too big for them and I think, "this may be the last time a baby of mine wears this."  or "we need to use up every last size 2 diaper because we may never have a bum that size again."  You got it, right?  I've been having a hard time giving up nursing.  Daisy doesn't have much patience for nursing right now, there are way too many things going on that distract her.  I know my nursing days are numbered.  This makes me sad, because I absolutely love that time with my sweet babe.  And then I saw a quote that goes something like this:  Don't be sad it's ending, be grateful it happened.  Oh, perspective!  I needed some of you!  I am so grateful!  I got to nurse my baby for a year, and it was wonderful!  I got to nurse five babies!  How blessed am I!  I will always have a place in my heart for new babies.  My favorite five moments in my whole life is when I held MY babies in my arms for the first time.  I believe that's just something that women crave. I'm pretty sure it's hard-wired into us.  Why do you think all the Relief Society sisters get all excited and smiley when you sit next to them with a babe in your arms?  They still feel it.  We all feel a sadness when our babies grow up.  That's part of being a mom.  You know what though?  There are a whole lot of things to look forward to, and I'm excited about those things too.  Like, I don't know, kids buckling themselves in the car?  That will be an exciting day.

Anyway, I feel the summer days flying by.  We don't go out and do a whole lot, mostly because of the buckling issue above.  Ok, that may not be entirely true.  What IS true is that five little kids running around anywhere with only me to chase them?  That is stress for me, and it's usually just not worth it.  Not to mention my babies nap, and interrupting that time leads to more stress for us all.  So, my poor kids make a whole lot of their own entertainment.

They do ok though.
Ellie is going to an art class taught by a neighbor girl.  She loves it.  She came home and tried to share her knowledge with her siblings.  It didn't exactly go as she had planned, but I thought it was pretty awesome.

The girls were using windows for some tracing:
I love watching them come up with imaginative, fun things to do.  And they really play pretty well together.  I'm grateful for that.  They fight too, of course, but they are also best friends.

We aren't entirely boring parents.  We took a picnic to Bridal Veil Falls.

My five little rugrats:

Oh, look, a somewhat normal photo of me!

You and I both know that couldn't possibly last.

Look at Daisy's red nose!  It was a chilly evening, and I don't think she liked the cool air much.

The big kids didn't seem to mind splashing through the freezing water though:
I'm pretty sure that was the exact moment Everett thought he saw a crocodile in the water and came booking it out.  Pretty funny.

And one more random pic that makes me giggle:
Maren thought to put a bib on Daisy, which was good.  Three bibs have to be better than one, no?  :)

Kids, I tell ya, what an adventure.

Father's Day

There is no doubt that I am a very blessed lady.  I am married to one amazing daddy.
He has always changed diapers without complaint.  He bathes, dresses, brushes, snuggles, reads to and feeds kids.  When my kids wake in the night, they go to dad.  When kids are sick, he's the one to sit by their side, hold their hair back and change their sheets, often while mom is still pretending it's not really happening.  He is gentle and kind.  He always explains the hows and whys.  He is sensitive to their feelings and does what he can to make things better.  Oh daddy-o, we are so blessed to have you!

I'm also blessed to have an amazing daddy myself:
I had to smile when I saw my dad wearing this shirt he got from my brother's kids.  I've only seen my dad in a t-shirt a handful of times, so it is something to smile about.  :)  My daddy is a great man.  He is full of faith.  He's always saying that things will work out, and they do.  He has always shown my mom that he loves her in his own little ways.  He taught us all to work hard.  He uses money wisely and has always encouraged us to do the same.  He is smart and inventive and proud of his heritage.  I love this man and am so grateful to have his example to follow, and my children too.

For Father's Day, we went to the farm to be with family.

Daisy enjoyed some homemade ice cream that her daddy made:

And the kids spent most of their time here:
They had uncles and aunts willing to cart them around country roads and they couldn't have been happier, bouncing around with their cousins.

Remember Pretty Boy?  He has a Pretty Girl now (my daddy, what a softie), and can often be seen showing off for her:
We had a great time on the farm, as always.  I have one amazing family.

Little D is now 11 months old.  I wanted to catch her on her actual 11 months, but she's not been feeling very well or happy lately, so I gave her a break.  Finally today she's playing happily on the floor on her own again for short times, and the smiles have returned.  Hip hip hurray!  I love a snuggly baby, but I also like, I don't know, going to the bathroom without trying to console a crying baby?  It's been a rough week.

Anyway, I tried to take some photos, but I'm not very good at getting her looking or smiling, so this is what I got:

Clapping:

 My baby is growing up.

My Lu was happy to give me some good photos though.

Love her hair?  I can recommend her hairdresser.  Her name is Ellie and she's fabulous!

This is What It's All About

Hello, friends.  Here's some of our summer:
Backyard firepittin'.

Nick had work meetings in Delta, so we made a day of it.  While Nick was doing work stuff, the kids and I were doing fun stuff:

This photo reminds me of my mom telling me once, "Can't you ever smile normal?"  I think that answer would be "No, mom, I don't think I can".  :)  And those wrinkles on my forehead?  They're there to stay, I'm afraid.  I didn't think smile lines could be on your forehead, but I'm totally calling them that.

We've had other fun things this week, and I even have photos on my phone, but my phone camera is being exceedingly naughty, so I can't show them.  We went to a pond that has a swimming/sandy area and the kids had a blast digging, digging, digging, and even surprised me by doing a fair bit of swimming in the cool water.  We should go back soon.

Also, this:
Someone got into some makeup.  She wasn't very happy that I was taking her picture, but it just cracks me up.

With all this summer fun, this mom needs a break!  Having five busy little bodies around, I just can't keep up with all the mess and naughtiness.  I'm so glad to be getting together with friends tonight!  My sanity, I will find you soon!
